Ewout wouldn’t be Ewout if he didn’t get to the bottom of the rat problem, literally. Armed with courage and curiosity, he enters together with urban explorer Vic the dark subway tunnels of the city, looking for the rats that have been plaguing this metropolis for years.
“Is it dangerous?” Ewout asks, just to be sure. Vic, the seasoned adventurer, answers without hesitation that it is ‘life-threatening’. “Trains can rush by at any moment and you have no idea when that might happen.”
The men walk into the metro station and try to enter the tunnel unnoticed. Ewout is somewhat hesitant about entering the metro tunnel illegally, but decides to do so anyway. He wants to see with his own eyes where all the rats are staying. “The residents of New York want the rats to stay underground, but I want to know how they live there,” says Ewout.
And yes, what they were so afraid of happens at that moment: a train is coming. “Quick, a train!” Vic shouts. The men run for their lives as the train gets closer.
Fortunately, they find a hiding place just in time. Ewout has to recover from all the excitement and fear. “I’m really shaking right now,” he admits. It’s enough for the presenter, he decides not to go further into the tunnel. “We’re really getting out of here,” he says. “I didn’t see a rat, but I think it was good.”
