Exploring Celebrities through Art: The NRW Forum Exhibition

There are 18 celebrities from music, drama, politics or sport who are represented with their exhibits in the NRW Forum. Each of them has their own room.

Look behind the facade of the public figures

“Every artist brings their own background to art,” says curator Alain Bieber. “Scandal rocker Peter Doherty, who comes from punk and is anarchic, paints rather expressively and wildly and also uses his own blood. He has also installed his former fixer set in one exhibit”.

Quite different with celebrity Harald Glööckler, whose showroom is rather pompous and glossy. The room of the rapper Samy Deluxe is simple. It is more reminiscent of a youth leisure facility than an art exhibition. The walls and exhibits, such as water dispensers, cassette recorders or slot machines are sprayed with colorful graffiti.

Rock musician Bryan Adams, on the other hand, features photographs of other celebrities, such as Stones singer Mick Jagger, model Naomi Campbell and the recently deceased singer Tina Turner.

self-made artists

Most artists are self-taught and have no traditional art training, explains exhibition curator Alain Bieber. Tennis star Michael Stich studied art for at least a few semesters. The Wimbledon winner is a big art fan and is also represented in the exhibition with large canvases.

His great hero: Caspar David Friedrich. “For me he is one of the greatest and most important artists”. Otherwise he would have liked contemporary and abstract art. His art is also abstract.

The tennis pro has been painting in his studio on the top floor of his house for about 10 years. For him an island of peace. A space where he can just be by himself, he reveals. For him, art is a way of expressing his thoughts and emotions.

Anyone can be an artist

“Visitors should throw all the stereotypical stereotypical thinking overboard and give the celebrities a chance to reinvent themselves and redefine themselves,” stresses Alain Bieber. “After all, as Joseph Beuys once said, anyone can be an artist,” adds tennis pro Michael Stich.

Certainly there are talents who are good with colors and shapes. “Some people may be better at it than others, but in general many people should perhaps have more dare to make art because they have far more talent than they think.”

An unknown celebrity artist

Among the artists is a painter whose pseudonym is certainly not familiar to visitors: Gedeon Schenkt. Curator Alain Bieber only wants to reveal so much: “The Person is from northern Germany and is male. We all associate him with something very different and now he has decided to make art”.

The NRW Forum will not announce the resolution to this celebrity until December. Until then, visitors can think about it and take part in a competition. The prize is a hand-signed work of art by this artist.
