Beautiful green and pink auroras illuminate the ever-growing sky to the south. These impressive displays are not only fascinating, but they also remind us that our little blue planet is close to an active star. Café Sciende on November 13 (language: English) about solar storms.
With the Sun’s magnetic poles about to reverse, the super-hot swirling plasma at the surface reaches a peak of activity, producing sunspots and violent phenomena such as solar flares and coronal ejections. The Earth’s magnetic field acts as a protective shield against streams of energetic solar particles, making habitability possible. However, it does not protect us from all dangers. Radiation bursts pass through the magnetosphere and CMEs can cause severe geomagnetic storms that disrupt our technology, such as in 2022 with the Starlink satellites. What exactly causes the sun’s 11-year cycle and its outbursts? How bad can they be and how vulnerable are we and our technology today?
Different research, around the world and in space, is improving our understanding of the sun, space weather and their effects. On November 13, two leading scientists in this field will visit the Nijmegen Science Cafe to join us to discuss these interesting topics and discuss the latest perspectives. Daniel Müller, project scientist for the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter and SOHO space missions, shares a selection of impressive images and data from these probes and explains what they teach us about the nature, function and solar radiation and the heliosphere. Viviane Pierrard, head of the Solar Wind department at the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy and professor at UClouvain, explores with us the different effects of space weather on the Earth and its environment and on people. In the evening, Lukas Proske on the bass and Michael Gustorff on the bass guitar will play intermezzos of jazz standards and their own pieces. Let’s highlight the dark sides of our star and get to know her better!
