Hitekno.com – In order to scientist has successfully explored to the bottom trough the third deepest sea on Earth, Philippine Trough. But what they got there was beyond expectation.
Unexpectedly, scientists even found plastic waste at the bottom of the Philippine Trench.
In March, oceanographer Dr Deo Florence Onda of the Marine Science Institute at the University of the Philippines, dived more than six miles to the bottom of the Philippine Trench.
He joins Victor Vescovo of underwater technology company Caladan Oceanic and the two discover plastic, man-made waste that pollutes the depths of the ocean.
No humans have ever been to the bottom of the Philippine Trench and the pair of scientists managed to explore there for 12 hours before returning to the surface.
“There was one funny scene as we explored the area. There is a white material floating around. I said to Victor that it was a jellyfish. We approached it and it turned out to be just plastic, “kata Dr Onda.
Reporting from Metro, Wednesday (2/6/2021), around 8 million tons of plastic waste will end up in the oceans every day.
Dr Onda said, being the first person to see garbage in the depths of the Philippine Trench is a privilege. However, he also witnessed the level of ocean pollution.
He feels a responsibility to inform the public that the garbage that humans throw away is not in the trash can, but instead pollutes other places and has the potential to endanger marine life.
