KOMPAS.com – Aurora is a phenomenon of light in the upper atmosphere of the earth that generally occurs at both poles of the earth.

Auroras are created when electrically charged particles called ions from the sun continue to flow from the surface of the sun, which is called the solar wind.

As the solar wind approaches Earth, it encounters a magnetic field that protects planet Earth.

In the ionosphere, solar wind ions collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms that come from the Earth’s atmosphere.

The energy released during these collisions causes colorful halos around the poles, the lights we know as auroras.

Do other planets have auroras?

Apart from Earth, several planets in the solar system, such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, have large atmospheres and magnetic fields, which can display auroras.

Auroras have also been observed on Jupiter’s moon, Io, where they are generated by the interaction of Io’s atmosphere with Jupiter’s strong magnetic field.

As is known, Aurora occurs in the Earth’s atmosphere because it has a strong magnetic field and interactions between magnetically charged particles in the solar wind and gas molecules in the atmosphere.

Atmospheric displays similar to the aurora have been observed on all the planets except Mercury due to its proximity to the Sun.

The magnetic and atmospheric dynamics of the planets are different so some have more intense auroras than others.

1. Aurora of the planet Mars

Auroras on Mars are thought to be caused by interactions between the solar wind and local magnetic fields on the planet’s surface.

Unlike Earth’s auroras, which occur mainly in the polar regions, Mars’ auroras can occur at lower latitudes, sometimes as far as 30 degrees to the south.

2. Aurora of planet Jupiter

Jupiter’s aurora are striking, much larger, and more intense than those on Earth.

This is caused by charged particles from the planet’s magnetosphere colliding with the atmosphere near the poles. Jupiter’s magnetic field is 20,000 times stronger than Earth’s.

3. Dawn of the planet Saturn

Auroras on the planet Saturn are also caused by interactions between charged particles and the planet’s atmosphere.

However, this phenomenon is not as intense as that which occurs on Jupiter because it has a weaker magnetic field.

4. Aurora on the planets Uranus and Neptune

Uranus and Neptune have weaker auroras than Jupiter and Saturn, and the auroras on these two planets are thought to be caused by interactions between the planet’s magnetic fields and the solar wind.

These planets are 1.8 and 2.8 billion miles from the Sun, respectively, so it’s no surprise that the auroras here are weak and infrequent.
