Paris (dpa) – More than 30 years after the death of Serge Gainsbourg, those interested can now visit the legendary Paris residence of the chanson singer and actor. The house in which the French musician lived for over 20 years remained unchanged after his death on March 2, 1991 – including the inventory.
It can be viewed in this condition from this Wednesday (September 20th): with filled ashtrays, opened chocolate bars and handcuffs that the police left in the house after nightly drinking sessions.
Charlotte Gainsbourg told the lifestyle magazine “Vogue” that she wanted to leave the house as it was. The actress and singer is the daughter of Serge and Jane Birkin, who died in July.
The visit to the approximately 130 square meter Maison Gainsbourg at 5 bis Rue de Verneuil, near the Academy of Fine Arts, leads to the bedroom in which the artist died of a heart attack at the age of 62. You can also see the piano on which Charlotte learned to play, the gold records and the photos of the women in his life, including Brigitte Bardot.
After Gainsbourg’s death, the house became a place of pilgrimage and cult with graffiti and pictures of the musician on the outside facade. Nearby, over 450 Gainsbourg relics are on display in the museum dedicated to him, including photographs, manuscripts, photos, clothing and jewelry.
