Explore the Enchanting World of Decolleted Faience Vessels with Art Scholar Ina Līne

On March 16, those interested are invited to a special excursion dedicated to the mentioned topic under the guidance of the curator, art scholar Ina Līne. Possibility to choose the most convenient starting time of the excursion – at 12.00 or at 14.00 (advance application by phone 26305946 is desirable).

During the tour, art scholar Ina Līne will reveal the amazing diversity of decorated faience vessels and their decorations at the exhibition – you will have the opportunity to learn about decolleting techniques, the colors used, as well as the use of vessels and the meaning of signs. The continuation of the conversation will take place in the Durbe Palace over tea.

The “flowering age” of English decolleted faience was the 19th century, when this industry developed into a global industry, contributing to the economic growth of an entire region of England and promoting the development of similar production in other European countries, including Latvia.

Decollated faience products, which are decorated mainly with decorations reproduced in the intaglio technique and mechanically transferred to the surface of the vessels, were for a long time valued significantly lower than any freehand painted porcelain object and perceived more as an industrial product. In recent decades, this attitude has changed significantly, recognizing that the number of “prints” for such objects, like Rembrandt’s etchings, does not reduce the aesthetic quality of the original work of art.
