Until October 31, the public can discover Irène Audier’s exhibition, Retrospective: 25 years of diversity at the bookstore-café La Caverne, at 11 rue Montorge in Grenoble.
“This year, I had to leave my large studio, which allowed me to sort, throw away but also to rediscover many paintings or drawings forgotten in boxes. And the idea of a small retrospective seemed obvious. We had to find a common thread, I chose a few drawings or paintings by decade and by color too, over around 30 years,” explains the artist.
His different sources of inspiration are revealed through the titles of the works, starting with the 80s and 90s. At the same time, throughout the paintings, what she calls “her writings” are interspersed.
“Following my stay on the Étang de Thau and later on Reunion Island, I let myself be carried away by the magic and violence of the Piton de la Fournaise and the cyclones. These are also my paternal roots and I am fascinated by the notion of energy that emanates from them. The eye of the storm resulted in one drawing per day, in small formats, with an additional large format using particular techniques. Before leaving, I found many photos and I decided to work on them, to erase the images and look at them with an inner eye,” continues the artist.
Then comes the period at the end of 1990, beginning of 2000.
Then, returning from her journey, Irène Audier created a series of 60 postcard-style images, with three drawings per frame. The themes are the roots, the stories around the volcano, the landscapes. This is perhaps the most realistic series of her work, according to her.
Since then, her works have been more abstract, with many meticulous collages, made with acrylic paints on Chinese paper, which she then cuts out and reconstructs. “I always look for a match between my gestures and the supports, hence the variety. The unfolding of the exhibition creates an itinerary which, I hope, will take the visitor on a journey,” concludes Irène Audier.
