Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Indonesia will experience day without a shadow from 6 September 2021 to 21 October 2021.
Researcher from the Center for Science and Space at the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), Andi Pangerang said the phenomenon occurred when the position of the Sun was directly above the Indonesian sky.
“When the sun’s position is above Indonesia, there is no shadow formed by an upright, hollow object at midday, so this phenomenon can be called a day without a sun’s shadow,” Andi said in a press statement, as quoted Between.
He further explained that a day without the sun’s shadow can be observed on October 9, 2021, at 11.39 WIB.
Indonesia has an astronomical geographical location of 6 degrees north latitude to 11 degrees south latitude, and is divided by the equator. That way, said Andi, the sun will be above the Indonesian sky twice a year.
He explained that the shadowless sky has already occurred in Indonesia this year, namely at the end of February to early April 2021, while the second will occur between September 6 to October 21, 2021.
Andi said the phenomenon of days without a shadow of the sun often occurs twice a year, for cities or regions located between two lines, namely the Tropic of Cancer; 23.4 degrees North Latitude) and the Tropic of Cancer. Capricorn; 23.4 degrees South Latitude).
Meanwhile, for cities located right on the Tropic of Cancer, Andi explained that he will only experience a day without the sun’s shadow once a year, namely during the June Solstice for the Tropic of Cancer and December Solstice for the Solstice.
In these three regions the Sun will not be at the zenith at noon throughout the year, but tilted south for the northern hemisphere, or slightly tilted north for the southern hemisphere.
In addition, Andi also explained the simplest way for the public to be able to observe the seconds of the phenomenon without a shadow. He said that people can use upright objects such as sticks or markers or other objects.
Andi explained that the object can be used to determine the phenomenon of the sky without the shadow of the sun by placing it on a flat surface, and then it can be observed according to a predetermined hour.
