“Recent studies suggest people infected with this variant were found to be 64% more likely to die than people infected with previously circulating variants,” wrote Prof. Zubairi.
The professor at the University of Indonisa continued, the emergence of this variant coincided with the high occupancy in hospitals and was known to increase the mortality rate.
However, the Pfizer vaccine has been shown to be effective against this British variant
“The good news is that vaccination in the UK – which uses Pfizer is proven to be effective against this B.1.1.7 variant. Alhamdulillah,” he explained.
Zubairi said that previous studies stated that B.1.1.7 is more contagious but not lethal and has spread to nearly 100 countries.
“Hopefully this latest study published in the British Medical Journal will be of concern to all of us,” hoped Prof. Zubairi.
