Although the demand is starting to grow, but sales electric car in Indonesia is still far from impressive. This is because, while more than a million units of conventional cars were sold during 2022, these non-emission vehicles only sold 10,000 units. Then what, anyway, the reason?
Automotive observer and electricity expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Agus Purwadi said, the electric car market in Indonesia is not yet as potential as electric motorbikes. Because, according to him, the choice of cheap electric cars is still very limited.
“Frankly, the most likely thing to achieve (the sales target for electric vehicles in Indonesia) is two-wheeled, yes, because the problem with four-wheeled wheels is in the number of models (which are affordable),” said Agus when met in South Jakarta, recently.
Currently, there are already a number of electric cars being marketed in Indonesia. However, the average price is still very high. Meanwhile, the only product that can be reached by the middle class is Wuling Air ev. The vehicle will be sold starting at Rp. 240 million with Jakarta OTR status.
According to Agus, if other manufacturers could present electric cars in the same class as the Wuling Air ev, it is very likely that sales of electric four-wheeled vehicles in Indonesia would increase rapidly.
“If there is no model (electric car) like the Wuling Air ev, it will definitely be difficult (increasing sales). Wuling doesn’t have any opponents, right now it’s the cheapest, that’s why it sells,” he said.
Furthermore, Agus hopes that in the future, there will be more affordable electric cars. However, if possible, the carrying capacity is greater than Wuling Air ev.
Wuling Air ev itself is the best-selling electric car in Indonesia for 2022 yesterday. This tiny vehicle sold 8 thousand units or almost five times more than the Hyundai IONIQ 5 in second place.
