Transmission potential also appears, one of which is in crowded public transport such as trains and buses with minimal distances between passengers.
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Dimas Dwi Saputro, pediatrician at Harapan Kita Children and Mother Hospital (RSAB) in Jakarta, has suggested using masks in crowded public facilities, such as public transport, to avoid tuberculosis (TB) infection .
In a virtual discussion on the health radio of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) monitored in Jakarta on Thursday, he explained that Mycobacterium tuberculosis which causes tuberculosis is spread through droplet (splash) from an infected person and can survive in the air for up to four hours.
“We can just hang out with those who are currently taking active TB treatment, without wearing masks,” he said.
The potential for transmission also appears, he said, one of which is in crowded public transport such as trains and buses with minimal distances between passengers.
“When we are in that public place we will be infected there because we are there every day,” he said.
“You can get infected if you don’t wear a mask,” he added.
He suggested continuing to wear a mask when in crowded public places.
In addition to healthy people who use masks as a form of prevention, their use must also be done in the morning for tuberculosis patients who are being treated, especially in the first few months.
This prevention, said Dimas Dwi Saputro, must be carried out considering that there are still many cases of tuberculosis that have not been detected in the country.
According to the Global TB Report in 2021, there are about 824,000 cases of TB in Indonesia. However, only 393,323 or 48% of patients who were confirmed successful and underwent treatment were reported in the national information system.
There are still 52% of TB cases that have not been found or have been found but have not been reported.
