Suara.com – Although it has been used worldwide, research on Covid-19 vaccine still being done. Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) predicts the fate of the Covid-19 vaccine will be similar to vaccine flu which is updated every year.
The head of the IDI Vaccination Advocacy Team, prof. dr. Iris Rengganis, Sp. PD., explained that vaccines need to be updated along with the virus that continues to mutate all the time. This condition also happened to flu virus.
However, this condition may only occur if the status of the pandemic has changed to endemic.
“For Covid-19, the possible vaccine will also be adjusted later. So it is likely to be like influenza which is adjusted every year according to mutations from the virus. Maybe Covid is the same because the type of RNA virus will continue to mutate,” explained doctor Iris in the TanyaIDI webinar, Sunday. (26/9/2021).
The mutation is carried out by the virus so that it can maintain its life in the human body, added doctor Iris. Like humans can defend against by increasing the immune system, while viruses mutate.
“This means that the current vaccine, if it has mutated further, may not be known anymore. This is what researchers in the world are studying,” he said.
Even though the status of the Covid-19 pandemic will change to endemic, Dr. Iris emphasized that vaccination is still important. As with the influenza vaccine which is injected once a year, especially in countries with cold winters, a similar pattern is likely to be the same for Covid-19.
He admitted that the vaccine does not mean to prevent 100 percent of people from infection, because it is very dependent on the faith of each person’s system. However, vaccines are effective at preventing milder infections than not being vaccinated.
“Vaccination is more to prevent death, prevent hospitalization. Transmission will still occur even though you have been vaccinated, but it will be mild,” he concluded.
