Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A new study found that the number of deaths in men due to cancer is expected to increase in 2050. The study says that the biggest increase will occur among men aged 65 years and older.
Men are now more likely to die from cancer than women. Because men are more likely to smoke and drink alcohol, behaviors that drive many cancer cases, they are also more likely to be exposed to carcinogens in the workplace.
Citing CNN Internationalin a study published in the journal Cancer Today, Australian researchers analyzed cases and deaths from 30 types of cancer in 185 countries and territories in 2022 to make projections to 2050.
The findings suggest that overall cancer cases among men will rise from 10.3 million in 2022 to 19 million in 2050, or an increase of 84%.
Meanwhile, cancer deaths are expected to rise from 5.4 million in 2022 to 10.5 million in 2050, an increase of 93%. Deaths among men aged 65 and over are expected to increase by 117%.
Countries with lower income and life expectancy are also expected to see a greater increase in male cancer deaths.
“From 2022 to 2050, in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, the number of incident cases and deaths is expected to increase 2.5 times. In contrast, Europe is expected to see an increase of around half,” the researchers wrote.
Just as in 2022, lung cancer is expected to be the leading cause of cancer and cancer deaths in men by 2050. The cancers with the highest expected increase in men by 2050 are mesothelioma for cases and prostate cancer for deaths.
Researchers say there is an urgent need for stronger health access and infrastructure including adequate personnel to improve cancer outcomes today. As well as preparing for the expected increase in cases in 2050.
“Expanding universal health coverage worldwide could enhance basic cancer treatment options,” researchers said.
Researchers also note that cancer outcomes disproportionately affect low-income countries and have low universal health coverage.
Earlier this year, a report by the American Cancer Society found that population growth and aging are the main drivers of the world’s huge cancer burden, with a global population of around 8 billion people in 2022 expected to reach 9.7 billion in 2050 .
“When it comes to the number of cancer cases worldwide, we believe that number will rise to 35 million by 2050, largely due to an increase in population in a population that get older,” said Dr. William Dahut, chief scientific officer of the American Cancer Society, told CNN International.
At the same time, if more people smoke and are obese, along with other cancer risk factors, the number of cancer cases is estimated to be even higher.
