Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Experts have succeeded in predicting the Earth’s collision with an asteroid. They estimate the exact date that a space rock called Bennu hit Earth.
It is reported that Bennu will hit Earth on September 24 2182 or around 159 years from now, quoted from Daily StarWednesday (20/9/2023).
Even so, the possibility of a devastating impact is very small. Because its width is not that big, only a third of a mile compared to the six miles the size of the asteroid that caused the dinosaurs to become extinct.
NASA estimates there will be a crater six miles across. The crash also affected 600 miles in all directions.
Daily Star also notes that there is a 1:1,750 chance of Bennu colliding with Earth in the period now to 2300.
NASA is known to have sent its aircraft to Bennu seven years ago. The aim is to collect samples in order to prevent the possibility of a major disaster.
The sample is on its way to Earth on September 24 2023. It is hoped that the 250 gram sample will help researchers find out about these rocks and information about the Solar System.
“Purified material from the asteroid Bennu will help explain the formation of the Solar System 4.5 billion years ago and possibly how life on Earth began,” explained NASA Science Mission Directorate associate administrator Nicola Fox.
OSIRIS-REx Project Manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Rich Burns, said his party was in the final stages of the mission.
“We are now on the final leg of this seven year journey and it feels like the last few miles of a marathon, with a mix of emotions such as pride and happiness with a focus on finishing the race well,” explained Burns.
