In the United States, the conditions for crash tests have been tightened, which is why many automakers massively failed them. Nevertheless, some brands managed to save their “face”.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the safest modern cars. Not all cars coped with tougher crash tests. About it told on the CarBuzz website.

Prior to the implementation of the new IIHS crash test rules, 101 vehicles received the award, and 65 of them received the Top Safety Pick+ award. Now their number has been reduced to 48 models. Only 28 cars received the main prize.

The IIHS had to change its crash tests due to the introduction of more electric vehicles. This is a heavier type of car, so collision simulations should take this factor into account.

The collision force during the side crash test has been increased by 82%. Also tightened checks on driving assistance systems. Vehicles must now pass a pedestrian collision avoidance test at night.

In 2024, they plan to introduce even more stringent checks. Because of this, automakers will have to actively improve the safety of their cars.

Toyota has won a total of nine Top Safety Pick+ awards and six more Top Safety Pick awards this year. Honda and Acura came in second with six Top Safety Picks+ and two Top Safety Picks. In third place is Mazda with six Top Safety Pick awards.
