Experts find hidden structures in the core of the Earth, look at the explanation

Expertin a recent study, deep hidden structures are discovered The heart of the earth. Read the explanation.

Until now, lessons in school tell us that our Earth is made up of four layers, namely the crust, blanket, outer core and inner core. However, recent research shows that there is a heart inside that has never been discovered before.

Joanne Stephenson, a geologist from the Australian National University, and her colleagues found evidence that there may be two different layers at the Earth’s inner core.

“We’ve always been taught that the Earth has four main layers: crust, mantle, outer core and inner core,” Stephenson said in 2021, citing Science AlertSunday (29/9).

Previous discoveries about the Earth’s layers were largely confirmed by volcanic eruptions and the results of seismic wave research. From there, scientists know that the Earth’s core, which has a temperature of 5,000 degrees Celsius, is only 1 percent of the Earth’s total volume.

“This is very interesting, and we may have to rewrite the textbooks,” Stephenson said.

Stephenson and his team used a search algorithm to find and match thousands of models of the Earth’s core. He linked thousands of pieces of data observed over the past decades about how long it takes seismic waves to travel through the Earth.

They looked at models showing the “anisotropy” of the inner core, that is how the composition or arrangement of basic materials inside can be different in different places. These differences affect the way seismic waves travel through the core.

Of the models they looked at, some models made more sense or fit the existing data better than others.

Several research models show that these waves move faster parallel to the equator (rotating the earth horizontally). Other models say that the mixture of materials in the heart allows waves to travel faster parallel to the Earth’s axis of rotation.

However, scientists still argue about the magnitude of the difference in the speed of the waves at certain angles. Therefore, there is no definite agreement on how and how fast seismic waves move according to direction.

“We found evidence that may indicate a change in the structure of iron, which may indicate that there were two separate cooling events in Earth’s history,” said Stephenson.

This discovery may explain why some evidence from experiments does not always match the models we currently use to understand the structure of the Earth. The existence of the Earth’s inner core has previously been suspected, with suggestions that the iron crystals that make up the Earth’s core have a different structural arrangement.

However, they are limited by global earthquake distribution data and seismometer devices, especially in the polar regions (polar antipodes), thus reducing their confidence in completing the research.

Future research may be able to fill this data gap and help scientists confirm whether their findings are right or wrong. That way, they can better understand the stories stored in the early layers of this earth’s history.
