Experts Call Patients Like Abu Widow Lucky, Why?

Jakarta

Social media activist named Permadi Arya alias Abu Janda | claiming to be safe from COVID-19 thanks to convalescent plasma. Epidemiologist from Griffith University Dicky Budiman said COVID-19 patients who received convalescent plasma donors such as Abu Janda were lucky people. Why?

At first, Dicky explained about the scientific status convalescent plasma.

“Scientifically it’s not confirm convalescent plasma proved significant (cure COVID) but that doesn’t mean it’s not. So so far, the latest research in the past week has given more and more positive signals,” said Dicky via voice message to detik.com, Monday (19/7/2021).

According to Dicky, there are a number of challenges for COVID-19 patients to obtain convalescent plasma donors. First, the donated convalescent plasma must be in a high titer state, meaning that the level of COVID-19 antibodies in the donor’s body must be high.

“Collecting plasma with high titers is not easy,” said Dicky.

There is a limit on the titer of residents who can donate their convalescent plasma, so that convalescent plasma is very rarely available.

“The limit is 1:250 for the titer,” added Dicky.

Then, convalescent plasma must be donated to patients as early as possible when exposed to COVID-19. The high price is also a problem.

“The next challenge is to give it as early as possible or as early as possible from the status of the COVID diagnosis when entering the hospital, it’s a challenge in itself because the process of getting plasma is also related to the problem of very expensive prices,” said Dicky.

Seeing the many challenges of getting a convalescent plasma donor, only lucky people get it.

“What is clear is that it is the lucky people who get (convalescent plasma). Because of that, the plasma titer was high and also (must be) fast,” he added.

“I survived because of plasma, I am a witness that I survived because of plasma,” said Abu Janda when contacted detik.com, Monday (19/7/2021).

Abu Janda said he entered the emergency room at Mayapada Hospital with severe symptoms. In addition, Abu Janda had a congenital disease that made his condition worse.
