Expert’s Allegation Causes 5 Dead in Tangerang Sewers

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Principal Researcher of the Center for Environmental Technology of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Nusa Idaman Said said the five people who died in water tunnel, Tangerang when checking Telkom’s cable allegedly due to lack of oxygen.

According to Nusa, the culverts contain methane, ammonia and carbon dioxide (Co2) gas from household waste. If the culvert is closed it will cause Co2 to accumulate and there is almost no oxygen.

“There is a lot of CO2, the oxygen runs out so people enter there, they will run out of oxygen. So the biggest cause of death is running out of oxygen,” said Nusa when contacted CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (12/10).

Co2 is a colorless, odorless, non -flammable, and slightly acidic liquid gas. While CO2 is heavier than air and soluble in water.

Nusa said that organic substances that come from household waste such as piles of garbage, if decomposed anaerobically will form Co2 and methane. Because the culvert has a closed and airtight space, it causes too high levels of Co2 so that oxygen levels are low.

“Because of him [gorong-gorong] closed for a long time Co2 which a lot of oxygen runs out. Co2 doesn’t explode, it’s just that if people enter there lack of oxygen, they die,” said Nusa.

In addition, if there is an organic matter that contains sulfur in the culvert then it will give rise to Hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S), H2S, is a colorless gas, toxic, flammable and smells like rotten eggs.

“Indications are like that, if H2S or ammonia smells, it won’t be strong enough, he [korban] definitely come out again,” said Nusa.

To anticipate victims who run out of oxygen when entering the culverts, according to Nusa, before entering the culverts the lids must be opened so that air can enter and reduce Co2 levels.

“But actually it was negligence on the part of his work, if for example the sewers are closed like that, usually the SOP is opened first, the simplest is to give fire, if the fire dies it means there is a lot of Co2 there, the oxygen runs out,” said Nusa.

Previously, the Head of the Cipondoh, Tangerang Police, Kompol Ubaidillah, said that five people who died in the sewers while checking Telkom cables were suspected to have been exposed to dangerous gases. This was revealed after the National Police Headquarters dispatched the Forensic Laboratory Center (Puslabfor) team.

The five people died in a culvert while checking cables at the Taman Royal Cipondoh Housing Estate, Tangerang City, Banten. Ubaidillah ensured that his party had conducted a crime scene (TKP) investigation.

“To ensure the answer, we will listen to the experts,” said Ubaidillah at the location, Friday (8/10).
