Upon our full entry into Schengen, the number of workers from third countries in our country who leave Bulgaria for other countries in the European Union may increase. The warning was given by Georgi Parvanov, a member of the Management Board of the Bulgarian Employment Confederation, in an interview with BNR.
Business in our country insists on importing workers, and it turns out that 40% of them leave the country to work for more money in EU countries, the business claims.
Parvanov commented that there are indeed cases, but with our entry into Schengen, they may become more frequent.
“Our observations are not so much. At the moment, the issued permits for all types of employment for people from third countries have exceeded the number of last year – 24,000. And so far, for 2024, we are at 27,000 and we will end the year with 35,000 up to 40,000 permits, which is a huge increase in recent years. If 40% leave the country, it is strange that they leave for countries like Malta, etc., which are not of the highest standard accepting us in land Schengen, the number may increase,” explained the representative of the Confederation of Employment.
He pointed out that there is an almost constant number of 150,000 to 165,000 in the labor offices and a large part of them are permanently unemployed and with low qualifications.
“What the offices offer does not meet the needs of the business. At the moment, third-party workers are being brought in, such as warehouse workers, general workers, cleaning staff. Little by little, in hotels and restaurants, assistant cooks, etc., technicians are also coming in. “We will probably import engineering personnel because there is a shortage,” Parvanov said.
He recommended looking at the “big picture”: “We need to see the salary growth, currently BGN 2,300 average salary is growing, for Sofia it is over BGN 3,000, because by next year, two, outsourcing will not be profitable in Bulgaria and we need to attract employers who are looking for highly qualified personnel.”
Parvanov explained that under the previous regime, Schengen restricted workers from third countries and it was even difficult for them to move to another site with the same employer. Now they can easily leave Bulgaria by plane, and when we fully enter Schengen they can also by land.
