Expert Warns: Second Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Infection Poses Greater Risk

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Internal medicine specialist Dr. Dr. Soroy Lardo, Sp.PD, K.PTI, FINASIM said that someone who is infected with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DBD) for the second time has a greater risk than the first attack.

“So, dengue fever will become serious if there is a second attack, called secondary infection,” said Soroy in a media briefing for the Executive Board of the Indonesian Doctors Association (PB IDI) on the management of dengue integration which was held online and monitored from Jakarta, Tuesday.

He said that according to a study, secondary infection would give rise to an antibody complex.

“So, the antibodies formed in the first dengue fever form a complex so that virus replication is higher,” said Soroy.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is caused by infection with the dengue virus, which is generally transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

The virus can cause leaks in blood vessels. If blood vessel leakage occurs, one of which is characterized by thrombocytopenia or a decrease in the number of platelets, this will be complicated by shock and bleeding.

Soroy said that daily monitoring is key in dealing with dengue fever. When platelets in the body fall below 100,000 micro liters, medical treatment must be sought immediately.

Clinical symptoms commonly experienced by dengue fever sufferers include fever, pain behind the eyes, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and red spots appearing on the skin.

“If this is the case then we understand the stages of the clinical course, there is a fever phase of one to three days, then a critical phase of three to six days and a recovery phase of six to 10 days,” said Soroy.

Good treatment in the critical phase can play a key role in preventing serious complications. In the recovery phase, patients are generally recommended to rest for five days because the remaining virus is still in the body.

Soroy also said that dengue fever patients sometimes still feel weak after three weeks.
