The security political situation in the world and Europe has not been so tense since the 1980s when Leonid Brezhnev ruled the Soviet Union and Ronald Reagan was president of the United States. Not far from Norway, Russia is trying to take Ukraine, and in Taiwan, experts fear that China could invade within not too many years.
– It is very unstable now. Many will claim that a war in Taiwan is likely within five to seven years, then it may be tempting for Russia to exploit it, says Katarzyna Zysk to Stavrum & Eikeland.
Zysk is a professor at the Department of Defense Studies and one of Norway’s foremost experts on Russia and security policy in the Nordic areas. She has also been a visiting researcher at Stanford, Oxford and Sciences Po in Paris.
Norway must adapt to the new reality
The professor believes that the NATO countries and Norway must adapt to the new reality of increased geopolitical unrest, where the probability of war has increased sharply. Zysk points out that in recent days Russia has made changes to the command structure of the Russian defense forces, which are clearly preparing Russia for a large-scale war.
– The point is to avoid war. Then investment must be made in defence, says Zysk.
Sweden’s defense chief Michael Bydén says that the country’s population should prepare for war, while Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre says that we should not worry about war.
– What is certain is that Russia has aggressive goals. They will continue, if they are not stopped, says Zysk in Stavrum & Eikeland.

– Norway will be affected directly
She fears several things, including a lack of investment in the military in many NATO countries, that Trump casts doubt on a lack of support if a NATO country is invaded, as well as various collaborations between countries that want to destabilize the international system such as China, Iran, Russia and North Korea, as factors that could escalate to war.
– If there is a confrontation between major powers, Norway will be affected directly, says Zysk.
Russia has the most nuclear weapons in the world, more than the United States. Although the main purpose of these weapons is deterrence, Zysk fears that if Putin is pushed enough, he may use them.
– Yes, if things really go wrong, says the professor.
