“It happens that you get a taste, and the task at hand is to remove the seeds and sow, or in the “best Pinterest” tradition, cut a cherry tomato in half and put the halves in the substrate, waiting for the seedlings,” says J. Vilcāne with a smile and adds that “some succeed to grow beautiful tomatoes, for another to rot their halves in a container.”
Why, however, experts do not recommend sowing the seeds of these tomatoes:
- Their varieties are suitable for mass production, large greenhouses, with a controlled environment, intensive fertilization.
- Tomatoes can be infected with one of the tomato viruses, and the biggest concern is TOBRFV, a virus that was only discovered in 2014 in Israel.
“It is particularly aggressive, and the bad news is that it persists in the soil, up to 10 years, and on structures, in plant debris, which is not characteristic of viruses.”
Can this virus be cured?
Agronomist J. Vilcāne says briefly: “No, the virus cannot be cured. The only option is to catch the strange signs in time, and throw the damaged plants (all) and the ones right next to them into the fire.”
