the essential In concert on Wednesday at the Counterpoint, Florence Katz will also lead a workshop at the Florida on March 28. She gives us her advice on how to best work on your voice.
“The first thing to know about singing is that you never stop learning!” This is a basic rule that Florence Katz, opera singer and conservatory teacher, reminds us of. This adopted Agenaise (born in Paris, her husband is from Lot-et-Garonnais) was on the stage of the Counterpoint on Wednesday evening with former students. But his love of singing is not limited to the stage, it also involves transmission. “When I was at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris, I was lucky to have very, very great teachers, who focused everything on vocal technique,” she remembers. “Gabriel Bacquier, the violinist Irène Joachim… Transmitting this passion seemed obvious to me in addition to performing on stage, and I started teaching very early.”
In the classic, we approach different styles
For more than 25 years, she has provided her knowledge at the Bourg-la-Reine Conservatory and regularly leads master classes in Tuscany and New York, with a desire to vary styles. When we talk about lyrical singing, you should know that the field encompasses several branches. “I specialized in baroque,” she explains, “but I also did chamber music, oratorio… These are quite distinct genres in classical music. I find that richer, more interesting, easier to teach knowing that you will have to approach different styles.”
To do this, everything of course starts with the voice. It is our main instrument, and it must be carefully polished and maintained. “I try to teach my students that everything starts with a healthy voice. Above all, it must not be forced. This may seem paradoxical, since in classical music, we force the power, but we must grasp the nuance. To give this power, we avoid rushing our voice, on the other hand, we will seek to develop its resonances. We must draw on all our inner energy. When we sing, musical phrases follow one another, and the voice accompanies these sentences.”
A good vocal cure
A whole learning process, which continues throughout a career. “From the moment we start to join hands with the singers, it is only the beginning of the path. When I give my lessons in Tuscany, I see professionals returning among the students. They have become attached, links are formed. are created, and what’s more, they can benefit from a good vocal treatment!” she laughs.
