Long eyelashes that always on fleek you don’t just get it. That takes hard work and dedication. We have therefore called in experts to tell you what you should and should not do, what the perfect technique is when it comes to using an eyelash curler and applying mascara and they tell us what the best eyelash serums are. Eyelashes you can flutter? This is how you grow them according to our experts.
First things first
Mascara tends to dry out and clump quickly. A primer counteracts this by softening your eyelashes with oils. ‘An eyelash primer keeps your eyelashes strong and supple,’ says make-up artist Estefanía ter Heerdt. ‘It gives volume to an eyelash and maintains the curl after applying mascara. In addition, the mascara adheres better after applying a primer.’
The technique
Apply your mascara like the professionals do. ‘Place the brush as close as possible to the base of the eyelashes, slowly close your eye and apply light pressure,’ advises beautician Annerose Verheul. ‘If you want more volume, wait a moment for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.’ For a lifting effect, concentrate on the outer lashes.
Extensions: what (not) to do
Do you have eyelash extensions? ‘Then do not use a primer, serum or mascara,’ warns Ter Heerdt. ‘The oils in these products can soften the glue that holds the extension and this can cause them to come loose. Do not rub or pick to avoid damage,’ Verheul adds. ‘And always have the removal done by a professional.’
The power of a serum
Formulas with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, shea butter, argan oil, castor oil, vitamin B5, vitamin E, aloe vera and glycerin can prevent your lashes from drying out and breaking, the experts say. In addition, peptides, vitamins B7, B5 and E, castor oil, panthenol and green tea extract can support eyelash growth.
