A young New York reporter and photographer for Business Insider, Joey Hedden, once faced similar problems. But the advice of a more experienced colleague, National Geographic photographer Kilia Yuyan, helped her cross the line between mediocre and truly impressive photos. Take lots of pictures
Digital cameras have at least one fundamental advantage over film cameras – there is almost no limit to the number of shots. A professional photographer advises taking many pictures of the same place – from slightly different angles, at certain times.

We are used to looking at the world from one point of view – from the level of our eyes. Therefore, photos taken from an unexpected angle can look amazing, even when it comes to the worst things.
For example, when taking pictures of a small child or your own dog, try to take the picture from ground level. A picture taken from the height of an adult will be boring and uninteresting.
And this principle works not only for small things, but also for big ones. For example, a shot of a building where grass from the shooting range enters the frame will give you a rather original look.

For landscape photography, the foreground is important
According to Yuyan, it is difficult to find unique natural landscapes today, because they were photographed many times long ago. But a good thing in the foreground – wildflowers or an unusually shaped tree – can refresh even a familiar landscape.
Yuyan recommends looking for a foreground subject and framing the picture so that the main landscape is gone.
“This gives your images depth, intimacy and makes your photos unique,” he said.

Take pictures up close
People often take pictures of interesting things from the place where they noticed them. A beautiful building or a blooming apple tree will look the same if you photograph them from several hundred meters away.
Yuyan advises to get as close as possible to the subject, even if your smartphone camera has a large built-in zoom. Not only will this improve the quality of the photo, but you will also see additional details that are worth photographing separately from as close as possible.
