Professor Cai Changyou suggested that patients with autoimmune diseases should choose traditional protein vaccines.
It was reported that the late actress Zhou Haimei had suffered from Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) for many years. Most of the patients with this autoimmune disease are women. Excessive immune cells attack various organs and tissues throughout the body, so the symptoms are variable. But the paradox is that although the patient’s immune cells attack their own healthy tissues, they have no resistance to foreign viruses and bacteria. However, their strength is worse than that of ordinary people. Dr. Cai Changyou, former chairman of the Society of Rheumatology, said that although patients with autoimmune diseases also need vaccine protection, he suggested that it is best not to choose nucleic acid vaccines to avoid increasing the risk of inducing autoimmune diseases. On the contrary, traditional protein vaccines are safer for patients with autoimmune problems.
Dr. Tsai Chang-you, director of the Department of Immunology and Rheumatology of Fuzhou University Hospital and also the executive director of the Taiwan League Against Rheumatism (TAILAR) of the Rheumatism Foundation, said in an exclusive interview with CBC’s “Listen to the Doctor” program today (3rd) that lupus erythematosus is most commonly diagnosed in patients with rheumatism. It occurs in women of childbearing age between 15 and 50 years old. The gender difference between men and women is 1:15. It is a systemic autoimmune disease. In Western patients, the most common erythema called butterfly spots appears on the face, but in the East Erythema does not often appear in people. The main symptoms are kidney disease and blood disease. Many patients will have symptoms such as proteinuria, hematuria or low white blood cells and platelets that are prone to blood stasis. Other symptoms include the hematopoietic system, heart, lungs, and brain. They are also common areas that are violated. It is particularly worth noting that patients with thyroid disease are hundreds of times more likely to suffer from lupus than the general population. People who have family inherited autoimmune problems and thyroid disease must be particularly vigilant.

When talking about vaccine selection for patients with autoimmune diseases, Dr. Cai said that he has collected nearly a hundred cases in the past year and conducted clinical research and analysis, and believes that the nucleic acid types such as AZ, BNT, and Moderna in the new coronavirus vaccine are Vaccines may indeed increase the risk of inducing autoimmune diseases, or worsen the condition of patients who already have autoimmune diseases. On the contrary, high-end, traditional protein vaccines such as Novavax are safer for patients. This research has been recently published in the well-known international medical journal “International Immunopharmacology”, and larger-scale research is still needed in the future.
