TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – Vaccines are needed for pregnant women and the elderly. This defies the notion that there are several groups in the community who are considered vulnerable and do not need to be vaccinated.
In fact, medical science recommends that these two groups of people need to be vaccinated.
Vaccineologist and Internal Medicine Specialist dr. Dirga Sakti Rambe explained that pregnant women are even very important to receive vaccinations.
“That many infectious diseases that occur during pregnancy can affect the growth and development of the fetus and can directly affect the condition of pregnancy,” he said in an informative presentation entitled “Pregnant Women and the Elderly, can it be in Vaccines?” which was broadcast by the COVIS-19 Handling Committee and National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN), Monday (21/12/2020).

dr. Dirga explained, pregnant women affected by influenza can be associated with premature birth.
Therefore, the Health Organization recommends that pregnant women get the Influenza vaccine, as well as several other vaccines that are important.

“However, keep in mind that pregnant women should not get live vaccines. For example, the MMR vaccine; Measles vaccine; Chickenpox vaccine, it must be postponed until the pregnancy is over, “he explained.
Apart from pregnant women, vaccinations can also be given to the elderly. In the elderly there is a decrease in the immune system due to the aging process.
Therefore, the elderly are a group that is very susceptible to infectious diseases, so there are some specific recommendations for vaccination for the elderly.
Such as the pneumonia vaccine to prevent pneumonia which can be deadly for the elderly.
Second, it is also important to give the influenza vaccine for the elderly because in the elderly, influenza disease can complicate severe pneumonia.
Third, the Herpes Zoster or Shingles vaccine, it is also recommended for the elderly. In addition, there are several other vaccines that can be seen in the adult vaccination recommendations
