“This is an important judgment,” says lawyer Stijn Verbist in “De Wereld Today” on Radio 1. He is an expert in legal protection against the government, and acts as counsel for a group of Turnhout farmers, among other things. “As many as three judges have ruled on this case. Normally there is only one.”
“The ethane cracker is being built near a protected nature reserve, Brabantse Wal in the Netherlands,” explains Verbist. “That is a Natura 2000 area. In the event of nitrogen emissions, no matter how small, European regulations prescribe that you must then investigate what the effects could be on nature.”
