Expert: Indonesia Is Behind About Vaccine Development

PCV, HPV, and rotavirus vaccines have just entered Indonesia in the last 10 years.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Experts vaccination Dr. Jane Soepardi MPH said that currently Indonesia is still far behind when compared to other developing countries regarding vaccine development. This he conveyed during an online discussion with the theme “Administration of Vaccination in Indonesia” which was monitored in Jakarta, Monday.

Jane revealed, there have been three vaccines that have appeared in Indonesia in the last 10 years. The vaccine is pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) for pneumonia, human papillomavirus (HPV) for cervical cancer vaccination, and rotavirus vaccine for diarrhea.

In fact, other developing countries have introduced the three vaccines much earlier. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, only a few provinces have received PCV and HPV vaccines.

“So gradually, because the vaccine is imported. The rotavirus will be produced by our own vaccine factory, namely Bio Farma,” said Jane who was involved in 20 times Pekan Immunization National (PIN) Polio and polio outbreaks in West Africa.

Jane hopes that by 2022 Indonesia will be able to independently produce the rotavirus vaccine so that children in the country are mass immunized to prevent diarrhea.

Jane said, before implementing a national vaccine campaign, what must be done first is to prepare the vaccine itself. Furthermore, if a vaccine is available, the vaccine used must be registered with the World Health Organization (WHO).

In line with that, the Ambassador for New Habit Adaptation and spokesperson for the Covid-19 Handling Task Force, Dr. Reisa Broto Asmoro, said that the government is still trying to find, develop and procure safe vaccines for the community. Independent efforts, bilateral cooperation to global collaboration continue to be made to obtain vaccines that are registered with the world health agency or WHO and must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM).
