Expert: Antibiotic Resistance Is More Difficult to Treat

Experts remind wiser to use antibiotics to avoid resistance.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Professor from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Dr. Hindra Irawan Satari, SpA(K), MTropPaed, said that antibiotics are one of the important discoveries in the medical world. However, its use must be as indicated.

“Antibiotics are an important discovery in the world of health because when used for indications they can save lives,” said the chairman of the Indonesian Infection Control Association (PERDALIN) in a virtual media briefing related to antimicrobial resistance, Thursday (7/10).

Hindra reminded people, including health workers, to use antibiotics wisely, one of which is to ensure proper use to avoid antibiotic resistance. Resistance antibiotics more difficult to handle so that other problems arise, namely increased morbidity, increased patient mortality risk, longer hospital stays and the cost of treatment can be doubled.

Hindra revealed, WHO noted that antibiotic resistance increased to very high levels in all parts of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 stated, today’s world community urgently needs to change the way they prescribe and use antibiotics, including reducing the spread of infection through vaccination, washing hands, practicing good food hygiene.

New resistance mechanisms are emerging and spreading globally and are threatening the ability to treat common infectious diseases. As a result, the list of infections continues to grow such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and food-borne illnesses become more difficult.

Sometimes, a disease is impossible to treat because antibiotics become less effective or unresponsive to currently available treatments. However, in the United States, antibiotics play a role in protecting the lives of about 200,000 people every day and increase the chances of survival by 5-10 years in newborns with bacterial infections.

Antibiotics are currently used to treat diseases caused by bacterial infections such as typhoid fever or typhus caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhii. Then, diferi due to infection with Corynebacterium diphtheriae that attacks the mucous membranes in the nose and throat, tetanus due to bacterial infection Clostridium tetani to urinary tract infections.

“Typhoid does not have a cure other than antibiotics, there is no cure for diphtheria other than antibiotics, also tetanus, pertussis, inflammation of the lining of the brain caused by bacteria, urinary tract infections,” said Hindra.
