Expert Advice on Children’s Health: Preventing Respiratory Diseases, Weightlifting Misconceptions, and Treating Styes

Santo Domingo.- Dr. Luly Gil answers concerns about children’s health.

How can I prevent respiratory diseases due to climate change? What can I give or do to my 6-month-old baby?

The doctor explained that insisting on vaccination since there is currently an outbreak of type B influenza in children, added that by vaccinating children there will be healthy children and it will help their immune system to fight all these diseases.

I took my 15-year-old son to the pediatrician and he suggested he stop lifting weights because he thought he would grow sideways. What do you think?

The doctor indicated that it is a slightly erroneous opinion, since one should see what the growth and size curve of that child is, how much he weighs and if he is at risk of obesity.

He also said that it is important to perform endocrinological tests and growth hormones to see what is happening with the child, if there is any alteration in the weight-height curve and if so, if they have an endocrinological condition for hormonal tests, consult with an endocrinologist, to thoroughly analyze the causes.

Another concern is: My son got a stye. Is that a treatment or was it because I denied something to a pregnant woman?

“You have to see if the tear duct is blocked, if the baby needs systemic and topical antibiotic therapy, in that case topical antibiotics could be used and evaluated by a pediatric ophthalmologist,” he said.
