A dental expert reveals what a person “should look out for” on a regular basis when it comes to oral cancer.

“Checking yourself once a month is important,” said Anna Middleton, a British dental hygienist, especially if you smoke and drink alcohol, according to the British newspaper Express.

These two factors are the “major” contributors to the development of oral cancer.

“Drinking large amounts of alcohol increases the risk of oral cancer by four times,” Middleton added.

It highlighted that heavy drinkers and smokers are 30 times more likely to develop oral cancer.

Other factors include poor diet, sun exposure, and human papillomavirus (HPV).

Middleton stated that HPV infection “could overtake tobacco and alcohol as the main risk factor over the next decade”.

She drew attention to the symptoms of oral cancer that must be alerted to, such as swelling anywhere in the mouth, jaw or neck.

Another possible indicator of the disease is difficulty swallowing, chewing, or moving the jaw or tongue.

Middleton added that “chronic sore throat or hoarseness lasting more than six weeks” should be checked by a dentist.

Also, watch out for “ulcers or red or white spots anywhere in the mouth that don’t heal within three weeks.”

There may be “numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth” or “a feeling that something is stuck in the throat.”

And Middleton advised to beware of “unexplained tooth loss”, which could also be a sign of oral cancer.

And Middleton strongly recommended that anything lasting more than three weeks needed further examination by a dental professional.

If oral cancer is diagnosed and treated at an early stage, the chance of a full recovery is higher.
