Expert Advice: Avoid Indiscriminate Antibiotic Use and Stay Healthy This Winter

Do not drink antibiotics indiscriminately, advises the expert

Advice on how to deal with the “cocktail” of viruses this winter period was given by virologist Prof. Radka Argirova in “The Day Begins with Georgi Lyubenov” on BNT. She once again urged not to use antibiotic preparations without medical indications, as well as drew attention to how important it is to take timely measures at the first symptoms. According to her, unlike previous years, now the balance between the viruses has been achieved.

“This year, the balance between respiratory viruses is being restored. Adding to them also covid with its new variants,” the expert pointed out.

Our country has not yet reached a level of morbidity that would turn into an “influenza epidemic”, but we are on its threshold. Most often affected by influenza A are now small children up to 5 years old and the elderly.

“At the moment in Bulgaria we are facing the peak of an influenza epidemic. In the individual regions there are different dimensions in numbers. The most serious situation at the moment is in Plovdiv and Gabrovo”, pointed out Prof. Radka Argirova

She specified that currently influenza A dominates in the country, and type B is much less – in only 7% of cases.

“There is, but it is small. We already know that when influenza B appears and there is a high incidence, we go to the “tail” of the flu wave,” assured the virologist.

Prof. Argirova again reminded how important it is, when we feel down and sick, to wear masks “without the need for anyone to remind us”, to wash our hands often and to ventilate the premises in which we are.
