We are talking about the Schlossberg Bahn, which runs daily from the Freiburg Stadtgarten up to the Freiburg Schlossberg. And that, as befits Freiburg, known as the Green City, since May 2021 even with solar power.
The rail-bound Schlossberg-Bahn is an inclined elevator that takes passengers in just under three minutes from the heart of the city center to the attractive local recreation area of Schlossberg, which offers a wide range of activities for young and old. Incidentally, in July 2008, today’s Schlossberg cable car replaced the 40-year-old cable car, which was in operation from the Stadtgarten from 1968 to 2006.

The trip to the top is a real experience. Of course, the train will take you back down after your visit to the Schlossberg. Up to 25 people can be accommodated in the cabin, which is barrier-free. Wheelchair users and passengers with walkers or prams can also use the train to travel up the Schlossberg. “Dattler”: unique location and top cuisine
The Dattler is one of the best-known and trendiest restaurants in Freiburg, where guests are not only spoiled with culinary delights, but also offers a top view from its exposed, unique location. The wonderful terrace is probably one of the most beautiful and spectacular in the Black Forest.
From the Dattler you can reach the well-known Kanonenplatz at ground level, from which you can also enjoy a great panorama of the Black Forest, the east of Freiburg and the old town of Freiburg. You can reach the summit of the Schlossberg with its Schlossberg tower after a short climb on foot in about 15 minutes. From there you can enjoy a fabulous 360° panoramic view of the Black Forest, Freiburg, the Rhine plain, the Vosges and the entire Breisgau. The construction of the 35 meter high observation tower was mainly financed by donations and so you can read the names of all sponsors on the front of the steps when you climb it.
