In 1910, the last ibexes of the French Pyrenees were shot, favorite targets of mountain hunters since the Middle Ages because they were easy to hit. If the “Iberian” type ibexes have now become observable again in Ariège, it is thanks to a reintroduction process started in 2014 by the regional natural park (PNR) of the Ariège Pyrenees. They were released in the vicinity of Ustou and come from the Sierra de Guadarrama, in Spain, where the species has been preserved for more than a century.
