Experience the Power: Caligula at Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater

As the manager of Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater, Dana Bjorka, emphasized at the press conference held on October 2, this season’s theme in all large-scale performances will be “power”. “Caligula” promises to tell a story with vivid and emotional techniques and make you feel how far a person and at the same time the whole humanity can be taken by such a form of power as tyranny.

Director Sergej Golomazov, explaining the moral of the play, says: “This is a musically dramatic play about the destructive nature of human pride and moral self-will, and about the no less destructive need to create idols for oneself.

In a sense, we are exploring the mechanism of how a bright idealist can turn into a monster who has stopped valuing life – both others and his own – into a tyrant who seeks salvation from his frustration and pain by causing suffering to others. To get out of such a funnel, you need courage, inner faith, love for a person.

Otherwise, the monster is doomed. However comforting this thought may be on a historical scale, it is important to understand how people today become Caligula and, if possible, how to prevent it.”

The main role of Caligula will be played by Shamil Khamatov, Rodion Kuzmin, Maxim Busel, Volodymyr Gorislavets, Ekaterina Frolova, Anatoly Fechin, Igor Chernyavsky, Oleg Teterin, Dmitry Pales, Vadim Grossman, Tatyana Lukashenkova, as well as other invited performers will be on stage alongside him. .

The creative team of the show under the leadership of Sergej Golomazov is supplemented by artist-stager Mihails Kramenko and lighting artist Yevgenii Ganzburg. The show will feature live music performed by musicians Vladimir Tuzov, Dmitriy Karpov, Yulia Savelyeva and Anton Vysotsky.
