Experience the Perseid Meteor Shower Tonight: Best Viewing Tips and Conditions

Tonight, anyone who settles down under a clear starry sky can take part in the spectacular Perseid meteor shower.

The phenomenon happens every year, often around the 11th, 12th and 13th of August. And tonight, the chances of seeing the meteor shower are at their best, according to astronomer Peter Linde, who is the chairman of the Swedish Astronomical Society.

– I think you should take the opportunity, it is the best night of the whole year.

The reason for the shooting star water is that the Earth is hit by a cloud of dust in space from Comet Swift-Tuttle, causing particles to enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

– They burn up and disappear. You can see them as fast trails of light in the sky for half a second to a second. It stands out that they appear so often.

According to Peter Linde, who is himself based at the Tycho Brahe Observatory outside Malmö, the weather is looking very good, at least in his part of the country.

– It will be very clear and fine, which will give good conditions to be able to see it tonight.

Those outside the bright lights of big cities have the best chance of seeing many shooting stars. No need for binoculars or a telescope.

– Anyone can sit down and look up at the starry sky. You have to be patient and sit in as dark a place as possible.
