A holiday to look forward to every year
How did Kārlis Arnolds Avots, who until now was an active participant of the “Shore match” in the actors’ team in the traditional duel against the musicians, now end up in the role of leader of this event? “When we found out at the organizers’ meeting that the long-time manager Andris Bulis will be busy this time, we looked for his replacement. I wonder who is the person who is so loyal to the “Krastu match”, who enjoys this event so much every year, and who is a talented artist who doesn’t have to search for words in the air? Karlis immediately came to mind. And he agreed!” Renārs Zeltiņš remembers.
“Of course I was happy about the offer. This will be like a little baptism of fire for me, I won’t hide that I’m even a little worried. So far, I have only managed weddings, but there will be such a big event. I have also already looked at the recordings of how Renard managed the “Coast match” in previous years, in order to learn from him. I already like that life gives me opportunities to get among the best professionals in my field, and Renars knows how to build a celebration at any time and place, so it’s cool to learn from such an example,” Kārlis admits.
The actor does not hide that “Krastu mačs” is his favorite summer holiday. “Basketball has always been very close to me in my life. It has taught me a lot, and I think that it is precisely because of basketball that I also do well in the theater, because there are many similarities, even a coach and a director. Speaking of the “Coast match”, I like that this event is not only a sports competition, but also a nice frill. With quality basketball, with great music, with the coolest people around. That’s why I look forward to this holiday every year.”

With basketball in heart and soul
The fact that Kārlis Arnolds Avots will now be one of the leaders of “Krastu macha” does not mean that he will not be seen on the field as a player. “We will conduct this event at different times. For example, Kārlis will be able to sign me up when I go to the field as part of the “Instagram” team in an influencer duel against the “TikTok” team. But I will introduce Kārlis when he fights with the musicians,” explains Renārs Zeltiņš, adding: “Kārlis and Ginta Graveli in the acting team make such a show every year that without them “Krastu mačs” is no longer even conceivable!”
Interestingly, for both guys, basketball was once a very important part of life. Renārs Zeltiņš ended his career as a professional basketball player due to an injury, while Kārlis Arnolds Avots trained in basketball at the Jelgava Children and Youth Sports School in his youth, and also participated in the European Rugby Championship as part of the Latvian U20 national team in 2015. Now they will be seen on the basketball court in the “Coast Match”.

“I want to see how Renard plays with great interest, because so far I have only seen small video clips of his progress in professional basketball. I’m really very intrigued by what he looks like with a basketball in his hands, what kind of shoes he wears,” reveals the actor, to which showman Zeltiņš laughs: “I guess that will be the best thing I can show, good basketball shoes. Because with playing basketball itself, I haven’t done it in a long time, I don’t even remember the last time I held a ball in my hands. I’ll probably have to leave with my daughter to throw the ball in the basket before that, but I want to help score as many points as possible in the “Krastu match”, because, as you know, every point is converted into a two-euro donation to Ukraine.”

Hollywood star in “Coast Match”?
Kārlis Arnold Avots admits that he decided to become the host of “Krastu macha” right away, despite the fact that at the moment he has to actively participate in the rehearsals of the new production of Daile Theater by John Malkovich himself! Namely, the new season of Daile Theater will be opened with the play “Leopoldstadt”, staged by none other than the legendary Hollywood actor and director John Malkovich.

Did Karl really replace Malkovic with “Krasti macha”? “No, no! Everything is negotiated. For example, even now I have a rehearsal with Malkovich, but I canceled for half an hour. Told: “Red, John, I have a business!” And he said no problem and let me go. I was also lucky that on the day of the “Krastu macha” the rehearsal will already be over, so I will have time to combine both things. But if it wasn’t, I was even ready to go talk to Malkovich and invite him to the “Coast Match”. I think he would have even come, because John really likes to be in Latvia and Riga,” reveals Kārlis, and when he hears this, Renārs chokes up: “But you try to invite! As coaches of the acting team!”
Kārlis as Ulias, Renars as Karnītis?
Perhaps another miracle will happen. Kārlis Arnolds Avots has been actively working on his project for two years now – the feature film “Ulia” about the legendary basketball player Uljan Semyonov. Karlis is both the author of the script of this film and also the actor of the main role.

“Currently, the film’s script has been handed over to professionals in Estonia for review, and filming will begin in the winter,” said Kārlis. Hearing this, Renard exclaims: “Cool! I generally respect Karl as a professional actor, but when I found out that he is making a film about Ulia and I will be playing Ulia myself, I excitedly imagined that no one else would really be able to do it better. That’s why I’m looking forward to seeing this film on cinema screens, because I have no doubt that it will be successful and as legendary as Ulia herself.”
Doesn’t Kārlis Arnold Avotas also have a role in mind for Renārs Zeltiņš, who already has experience in the big cinema, filming in “Soulstorm”? “Renars will have to play for Raimonds Karnītis, the head coach of the titled basketball club TTT. Only Karnītis smoked a lot, but Renārs is already a sporty guy for us, I’ve never seen him with a cigarette in his teeth,” laughs Kārlis, but Renārs immediately exclaims insistently: “I’m ready for anything for this role! Yes, I really don’t smoke, but in this case I’m ready to sacrifice.”
So now there are two intrigues ahead – will it really be possible to meet John Malkovich in “Krastu macha” and will Renārs Zeltiņš play Raimonda Karnītis in the movie “Ulia”?
