In the “Best Of Cinema” series, StudioCanal is bringing classic films back to the big screen as 4K restorations – which is particularly worthwhile for action fans on November 7th, when “Universal Soldier” can be seen in selected cinemas.
The soldier Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren) starts going crazy during the Vietnam War and murders innocent people. Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) tries to stop him, but in vain: the two shoot each other. 23 years later, however, the soldiers are brought to life by the government as part of the top secret “Universal Soldier” program and programmed to become mindless recipients of orders. But what doesn’t really work…
Deveraux begins to remember the past and now tries to escape his existence as a government fighting machine. He is supported by reporter Veronica Roberts (Ally Walker). But of course those responsible for the program don’t just accept something like that and send out the other Universal Soldiers – among them Scott, who also remembers the past and now absolutely wants to destroy his former war comrade…
Action cinema that is no longer made today
It’s hard to believe looking back, but of all people, Roland Emmerich, the Swabian Master of Disaster, the man known for digital effects-filled, family-friendly popcorn entertainment like “2012” and “The Day After Tomorrow”, released in the early 1990s -years with “Universal Soldier”, one of the best-known and most popular films of the then Golden Age of Action.
Absolutely everything a fan’s heart desires is offered. In Emmerich’s Hollywood debut, two charismatic tough-guy stars get to let off steam, and there’s also powerful, brutal action, lots of big explosions and a spectacular chase between a prison van and a truck! And everything is real – nothing computer! But “Universal Soldier” not only has first-class action to offer, but also has a good dose of humor, which makes the film a wonderful, incredibly charming piece of entertainment that can now finally be enjoyed in the cinema again!
If you like hand-made action and can smile at sayings like “Your comrades fired enough ammunition at us to destroy all of Eastern Europe and you’re complaining to me about the damn seat belt?”, you should definitely make a note of a visit to the cinema!
