Expensive fuels: proposal for maximum price and extension to the cut in excise duties

There seems to be good news regarding the now chronic expensive fuel. The National Government seems to be thinking about a further extension of the cut in excise duties on fuels, aiming for an ad hoc Decree Law on the issue. The intention would be to further lighten the state taxation on petrol, diesel and LPG in accordance with a cut to be made also for the costs related to electricity and gas bills. To date, the deadline for the cut in excise duties practiced so far is set for next 8 July; it is therefore understood that in terms of timing we are within a rather narrow range.

The Undersecretary for the Economy intervened to mention the start of work on the extension of the cut in excise duties, Maria Cecilia Guerrawho talking to Future he admitted that the National Government is already “working on a new intervention”.

However, it must be said that today the expensive fuel seems to have assumed a configuration similar to an event beyond all control. A condition that could be permanently (hopefully) revised by the Government, which would aim at a maximum price cap practicable at the pump both for what concerns gasoline and for what concerns diesel and also LPG; this in accordance with the extension of the cut at excise duty.

The proposal of a maximum price against expensive fuels

There is a proposal that could prove to be quite interesting to put a stop to the current chronic phenomenon of expensive fuels. In fact, the proposal presented by some deputies of the Democratic Party thinks of introduce a real maximum price to be applied to the pumpat least for an initial period of two months.

The Mixed Group, on the other hand, proposes to increase the time span for the insistence on cutting excise duties on petrol and diesel, bringing the limit to a further two months: that is, until next 8 September. The state would take over the measure through a small 5 billion euro “treasury” from the extra-profit revenues.

Meanwhile both petrol and diesel have well exceeded the psychological threshold of 2 euros per liter of fuel delivered. The Observatory of the Ministry of Economic Development says that today, in self mode, the price for a liter of gasoline is in the order of 2.069 euros per liter (on average) or 2.006 euros per liter in the case of diesel (always considering a value medium). If we pass to the service, petrol is paid on average € 2.195 per liter or € 2.139 per liter for diesel (always on average). Meanwhile, in the case of Brent oil (reference for Europe), oil stands at around 120 dollars a barrel.
