There are plenty of images on social media of a meteor that appeared last night over the English Channel between France and England. Meteor SAB2667 was a special one because its arrival had been announced by astronomers. It was only the seventh time that this succeeded. “Proof of the rapid progress in the detection of asteroids,” says the European Space Agency.
ESA reported last night that a small meteor, one meter in diameter, had been discovered to “safely” enter the atmosphere over France between 3:50 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. According to the BBC, it was just before 04:00 (Dutch time).
The intrusion heated the piece of space matter, causing it to burn and the sky to glow brightly for a short time. It is not known whether any material from the meteor hit Earth or the sea.
In addition to southern England and northern France, the meteor was probably also seen in Belgium and the south of the Netherlands.
