Expected from Apple: iPhone 13, AirPods 3 and new Apple Watch

September is traditionally the month in which Apple unveils its new iPhones and most important accessories. Last year, the iPhone 12 only revealed in October, but that was an exception. Normally, the Apple event takes place in September. Whatever the case, rumors about the new Apple products come from increasingly reliable sources, and paint a clear picture of what’s to come.

iPhone 13?

The new iPhones would remain the same in terms of screen sizes iPhone 12series. The name is still under discussion: according to some media, Apple would avoid ‘iPhone 13’ because of the unlucky number, although the company has already had several products with ‘thirteen’ in the title in the past. For the sake of convenience, we therefore use the title ‘iPhone 13’.

So the iPhone 13 would appear in the same formats as the iPhone 12. In the middle there are the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, both exactly the same size with a 6.1-inch screen. The smaller iPhone 13 Mini has a 5.4 inch screen, the larger iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 6.7 inch screen.

Faster screens, latest Mini?

The next iPhones would have faster screens than on iPhones so far. The new models are rumored to have a 120Hz screen, where iPhones have done it with 60Hz until now. That ensures smoother scrolling and smoother gaming.

In addition, the speed would be adaptive, adapting to what happens on the image. For example, you scroll at 120Hz, but you read at 1Hz: nice and quiet for your eyes. That technique would also make it possible to leave the screen on all the time, even when the phone is locked. The screen would then show the clock and incoming messages. This faster screen may be limited to the more expensive Pro models of the iPhone 13.

The screen notch of the iPhone 13 may be smaller for the first time. The bite from the top edge of the screen, the so-called ‘notch’, made its appearance in 2017 with the iPhone X. The plane contains the selfie camera and face scanner, things that can now be made smaller and therefore take up less screen space.

Furthermore, the iPhone 13 Mini would be the last small iPhone for the time being. Sales of the iPhone 12 Mini would be so have been disappointing, that Apple would not want to follow up on it in the long term. The iPhone 13 Mini was already in full development at that time, and would therefore still appear.

Better cameras, faster chip

Like every year, the new iPhones are expected to get a faster chip. Apple has been developing these chips itself for years now and usually manages to achieve considerable speed gains each year.

The cameras are also improved almost every year, both physically and with innovations in machine learning applied to photos and videos. The Pro models in particular would receive improvements, with larger lenses and larger sensors. The Max model is also said to get improved image stabilization with sensor shift technology.

The new iPhones could also be film in portrait mode, blurring the background. Until now, that feature was only available with photos on the iPhone. The Pro models would also soon be able to shoot images in ProRes, an image codec that is used by professional users.

AirPods 3: a new look for the first time

In addition to the iPhone 13, Apple would also AirPods 3 to reveal. For the first time since Apple unveiled its wireless earbuds in 2016, a new design would be coming. That design would resemble that of the AirPods Pro: shorter stems, rounder earbuds and a wider, shorter charging case.

The AirPods 3, unlike the AirPods Pro do not have rubber ear tips. The rubbers on the Pro earplugs close the ears, thus improving the active noise reduction. Such ‘active noise cancellation’ would therefore not come to the regular AirPods, but would be limited to the Pro model.

However, the battery life of the new AirPods would have been improved, and the charging box would be wirelessly rechargeable as standard. The water resistance would be improved and there would be support for spatial sound. Recently, Apple has been offering a growing portion of its Apple Music library in Dolby Atmos, and new AirPods should better mimic that three-dimensional sound.

Apple Watch Series 7: New Design

This year it has been three years since the Apple Watch Series 4 appeared, and the watch brought its first external innovation. Now it would be that time again, with a design that matches that of recent iPhones and iPads: with flat edges.

In addition to those flat edges, the screen edges would also become smaller again. Physically, the Apple Watches would remain the same size, but because of those narrower bezels, the screen size still grows. Also, the screen would be moved closer to the surface, making it easier to read in bright light.

Furthermore, the new Apple Watch would contain a larger battery and therefore be faster, but users would not notice that. The processor is also faster. New health sensors wouldn’t be added this year; a body temperature sensor would have moved to 2022. Also a new version of the cheaper one Apple Watch SE and a sturdier version of the Apple Watch aren’t expected until next year.

iPads and MacBooks?

According to the usually well-informed Mark Gurman of Bloomberg Apple has even more in store this fall. For example, the iPad Mini would be completely revamped for the first time, with thinner screen bezels and a design that would better match the iPad Air and iPad Pro. Furthermore, the regular iPad would be renewed and thus become faster and thinner.

Apple would also come this year with new models of the MacBook Pro. That model would contain a faster version of Apple’s own Mac chip, the M1X. With that, the laptop would really be aimed at demanding, professional users.

Following on from the iPad Pro, the new MacBook Pro also get a mini LED screen. Such a screen has a finer mesh backlight and therefore a higher contrast, without the disadvantages of an OLED screen. According to some rumors, the new MacBook Pro is saying goodbye to the Touch Bar, and is bringing back the regular function keys.

Ports such as HDMI and SD card would also return after years of absence, as would the MagSafe-charger.
