NEW YORK – The New York area kicked off more wintry, frigid weather on Monday after record heat was set for several days last week.
Central Park recorded a temperature of 30 degrees Monday morning for the first time this season. Expect a cool day Monday with highs below 50 degrees, although sunny skies will feel better. Temperatures drop further Tuesday morning, which could trigger new freezing checks by the National Weather Service.
A cold shower with some snow mixed in the north and west will arrive on Tuesday afternoon. Other spots may see an icy or winter mix. Areas at higher elevations and places that see the coldest temperatures are more likely to see some snowflakes, but no significant or truly measurable accumulation is expected under this system.
Sullivan, Ulster and Orange counties in New York could see a winter mix early Wednesday, so travelers are advised to take extra precautions on roads and trains. It might be slippery in the morning. Some in those counties saw a couple of snowflakes fall Sunday, a weak first “snow” not widely expected. Wednesday won’t bring much either.
The temperatures we saw in November in the 70s may not return. Temperatures in New York City will remain below 50 degrees for the foreseeable future. Still, the outlook for travel this holiday season looks good, for now.
