Expected autumn increase in corona started: increase in infections by 48 percent

More testing was done last week and the percentage of positive tests rose from 8.1 to 10.3 percent. The number of positive tests is increasing in every age group.

For example, the virus was found last week in 1434 children aged 5 to 9 years. That is 55 percent more than the week before. Among 45- to 49-year-olds, the number of new cases rose by almost 62 percent. An increase of almost 75 percent was seen among the seventies and almost 80 percent among the over-90s, but these are still fairly small numbers.

Relaxations cause

According to the RIVM, the relaxations have led to more contacts in the entire population, and therefore to more infections. “That is a clear cause,” says Susan van den Hof of the RIVM. “We expected that. We see it across the board, in all age groups and regions. And especially in regions where there are pockets with low vaccination coverage.”

Reported Positive Tests

More infections due to parties

The source and contact investigation shows that more and more infections can be traced back to parties, drinks and weddings. A source is not found for all infections. But where that is the case, a party is increasingly the place where the virus has been passed on.

Four weeks ago, 149 infections could be traced to a party. That was about 3 percent of all infections for which a source is known. Last week, parties already accounted for almost 5 percent (173 infections) of all source infections. This week, RIVM counted 367 infections that can be traced to parties. That’s 6.8 percent.

As it turned out earlier at a village festival in the northeast of Friesland at least ten visitors infected. There are also suspicions in other places in the country that parties have caused a rapid local spike in the number of infections.

More than half of the new cases for which the source is known have been infected at home, at the hands of a housemate or family member. Visiting each other led to 14 percent of cases.

In about 14 percent of the people, the infection could be traced to a school or childcare. That’s similar to last week. Of all the people who tested positive since the beginning of August, the school or daycare was the source in 10 percent of the cases.

After education, the work situation follows: about 8 percent of the people there have become infected. That percentage is similar to last week, but above the level since early August.

The number of new corona patients in hospital has risen by 8 percent this week. Last week there were still 260 new recordings. This week, 281 new patients were admitted to the hospital. Hospital occupancy also increased again last week.

This is apparent from the latest figures from the RIVM and the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS). There are currently 512 corona patients in hospital, 374 of whom are in the nursing ward and 138 in intensive care. Last week there were a total of 483, 41 of whom are in intensive care. That number has increased by 54 percent.

The OMT and RIVM already indicated in their scenario that we can expect a small wave this winter. They hope that the peak in the hospital will be limited because the most vulnerable people have been vaccinated.

8 out of 10 Dutch people vaccinated

New people still report weekly to the RIVM for a first vaccination. It’s about tens of thousands a week. Nearly 85 percent of the population age 12 and older has now had at least one vaccination. About 81 percent of the Dutch population is fully vaccinated.

There are still considerable differences between different regions. For example, just a quarter (27 percent) of the inhabitants of Urk have been fully vaccinated. In Staphorst this concerns 52 percent of the inhabitants and in Neder-Betuwe and Reimerswaal the vaccination rate is 58 percent. In five municipalities, more than 90 percent of the population is fully vaccinated. The map below shows how your municipality is doing.
