Chinese officials announced on the 3rd that, as agreed between China and the United States, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will visit China from July 6 to 9. The news immediately attracted the attention of international scholars who were attending the 11th World Peace Forum in Beijing that day.
Wang Jisi, founding dean of the Institute of International Strategy at Peking University, said that China and the United States have many fiscal and financial issues that need to be discussed together, including the exchange rate of the RMB against the US dollar, the US government bonds held by China, and the inflation risks faced by the United States. The financial departments of the two sides are expected to overcome political obstacles and promote practical cooperation.
According to Wu Xinbo, dean of the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University, China’s concerns also include the high tariffs imposed by the previous US government on China and the US’s technological suppression of China. “This should be part of the face-to-face discussions between the economic teams of the two countries.” .
Recently, high-level officials from China and the United States have had frequent interactions. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken recently concluded his first visit to China since taking office. This is also the second visit to China by a U.S. Secretary of State after more than four years. The visit reached a number of positive consensus and results, including “the two sides are willing to continue to promote the Sino-US Joint Working Group consultations to resolve specific issues in Sino-US relations.”
“Officials of the two countries seem to be ready to resolve issues such as flights again.” Douglas H.PaaL, a distinguished fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace of the United States, said in a speech at the World Peace Forum, suggesting that the United States and China maintain the existing Opening of channels of contact.
Cliff Kupchan, chairman of the Eurasia Group, an American political risk consulting firm, also paid attention to the progress of this joint working group, and expressed the hope that policymakers of the two countries could better coordinate and manage bilateral relations.
However, looking forward to the Sino-US relations in the future, Chinese and American scholars who participated in the meeting generally held a cautious attitude. Some scholars bluntly stated that whether China and the United States can effectively “manage and control competition” has become a global challenge. However, it is impossible for the two countries to fully “decouple” economically, so new ways of cooperating must be found.
“Both sides should develop some relatively simple goals and find common interests.” Cliff Kupkan said.
In his speech, Wu Xinbo put forward a number of suggestions on reconstructing the framework of stable Sino-US relations. The most important thing, he said, is to set “red lines”. He said that China and the United States, as the world’s two major economies, should care about their respective national interests while also caring about the overall interests of the international community, “and this can be used as a starting point for the framework of bilateral relations.”
The above-mentioned scholars also reminded that in the development of bilateral relations between China and the United States, attention should be paid to preventing various potential sources of instability and preventing incidents from turning into crises. (over)
