The construction phase lasted two years, and on Friday “Spar” reopened its logistics center at its headquarters in Graz. Total costs: over 50 million euros.

It took two years, but now the fifth expansion stage is complete at the Graz site. “Spar” invested over 50 million euros“The expansion was necessary in order to meet the growing demands for a large selection of products and to ensure the supply of 1.4 million people in the region of Styria and southern Burgenland,” explains the Styrian “Spar” boss Christoph Holzer.
“We are thereby setting an example of our commitment as a reliable local supplier in the region,” adds “Spar” CEO Hans K. Reisch.
40 percent more space
The existing logistics area of the headquarters was expanded by 40 percent. The extensive expansion added 12,000 new pallet spaces, half of which are in an automated pallet high-bay warehouse. The innovative technology was developed together with the Styrian logistics expert Knapp implemented. This would increase productivity on the land enormously. “It is sustainable, conserves resources, creates the most modern working conditions and ensures robust supply,” emphasizes Marcus Wildwho is responsible for logistics on the “Spar” board.
The sun is shining for “Spar”
On the roof of the new logistics centre, a new PV system which delivers six times more electricity than the previous system, with an output of 700 kWp. “With the current investment, we are optimally securing the logistics site in Graz-Puntigam for the future. The new PV system on the roof produces the annual electricity requirements of around 250 households,” says Holzer, describing the successful reorientation.
Impressive numbers
The Graz branch is one of six regional headquarters in Austria. The 273 “Spar”, “Eurospar” and “Interspar” locations as well as “Spar” Express petrol station shops in Styria and southern Burgenland are supplied from Graz. In total, over 7,900 jobs secured.
900 employees work at the Graz-Puntigam site alone, the warehouse area alone is almost 40,000 square meters. 570 different suppliers bring almost 3,700 pallets per day of new goods. Over 5,350 different products from the areas of non-perishable food, fruit and vegetables as well as milk and dairy products are delivered from here. A further 18,000 products are stored in the central warehouse in Wels and are delivered to the markets via the warehouse in Graz using cross-docking. The expanded warehouse now has 31 new and a total of 94 delivery and delivery gates.
Truck fleet brings it to the people
The fleet in Graz includes 56 trucksSince autumn last year, the company’s truck and car fleet has been fuelled with bio-based HVO fuel made from used cooking oil and fats. This saves up to 90 percent of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel. Regional suppliers are also important for “Spar”: Over 4,000 products from 333 producers find their buyers here.
