Cheonggye Plaza – Sewoon Shopping Center – Gwangjang Market – Cheonggye Plaza, a total of 4.8km in operation – suspended on Saturdays
Since November of last year, self-driving buses going to and from the Cheonggyecheon area in Seoul will run to Cheonggye 5-ga Gwangjang Market, which is emerging as a ‘hot place’. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 24th, the City Transportation Office will expand the self-driving bus route, which circulates a total of 3.4 km from Cheonggye Plaza to Sewoon Shopping Center and Cheonggye Plaza, to a total of 4.8 km from Cheonggye Plaza to Sewoon Shopping Center, Cheonggye 5-ga (Gwangjang Market) and Cheonggye Plaza.
Also change the running time. 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. From noon to 1:30 p.m., which is lunch time, the operation is suspended for safety reasons. Saturday service is suspended due to the aftermath of road closures following downtown rallies.
A city official said, “We temporarily suspended the operation of the Cheonggyecheon self-driving bus from the 17th to extend the route.”

This bus is not an autonomous vehicle with radar and cameras attached to existing vehicles, but an autonomous vehicle (8-seater) designed for self-driving public transportation from the planning stage. It was produced by 42dot, a self-driving car company. To use self-driving buses, you can install a smartphone application dedicated to self-driving in Seoul. Boarding is free. The city operates self-driving buses in Sangam, Gangnam, Cheongwadae, and Yeouido, including Cheonggyecheon. In October, the world’s first self-driving late-night bus will be introduced.
The late-night self-driving bus will run from midnight to 5 a.m. the next day on a 9.7km exclusive bus lane from Hapjeong Station to Dongdaemun (Heunginjimun), where there is a high demand for night travel due to the concentration of universities and large shopping malls. Next year, the service section will be extended to Cheongnyangni Station. Through this, the city’s plan is to start full-scale electric self-driving bus service with arterial function that connects the city center and the sub-city center.
Yoon Jong-jang, head of the City Transportation Office, said, “The city’s self-driving vehicle demonstration environment is developing to a world-class level.”
