Expansion of Red Line Electric Train Nearing Completion in Cochabamba

The expansion of the red line of the electric train, which now extends to kilometer 7 of Petrolera Avenue, is nearing completion. With 93 percent progress, it is expected to be received in February and is committed to improving transportation in the southern area of the city of Cochabamba, although residents aspire for more.

The work, which begins near the UMSS Faculty of Agronomy, includes a tunnel built to facilitate the flow of vehicles and pedestrians on the entrance road to the K’ara K’ara dump.

This new section, approximately 2.8 kilometers, has two new intermediate stops: one at the temple of Santa Vera Cruz and another at the entrance to the Arrumani bridge.

Despite these advances, residents expressed their demand for the line to be extended to Angostura, which could significantly boost the use of this means of transportation. “We have seen that people do not travel much along this line,” observed the leader of Ushpa Ushpa, Pedro Luna.

In September 2022, the President of the State, Luis Arce, inaugurated the operations of the red line as a new transportation system in Cochabamba, with a route of more than five kilometers to Agronomía and a travel time of 20 minutes.

In March 2023, the Ministry of Public Works announced the injection of 68 million bolivianos from the General Treasury of the Nation (TGN) for two expansions. The first reached the heart of La Cancha, rehabilitating the old station, and the second intended to reach Ushpa Ushpa. The decision to limit the current expansion to kilometer 7 is aligned with the Government’s plans to build a new interprovincial terminal in the sector, explained the UTF coordinator, Augusto Chassagnez. However, future projects are being considered to extend service into the upper valley, he added.

The Ministry of Public Works analyzes alternatives to extend the train service to Sacaba. Meanwhile, it requested the environmental license for the yellow line, which will connect the airport and the new bus terminal in Albarrancho, passing through agricultural land.
