Expanding the Esports Industry, PUBG Holds Billions of Rupiah Prize Competition

According to Newzoo data in 2019, smartphone users in Indonesia have reached more than 82 million and more than 52 million players game mobile.

This puts Indonesia ranked 17th in the world as the most mobile game user and contributed 624 million US dollars or the equivalent of Rp. 8.7 trillion for mobile gaming throughout 2019.

Until now, the development of the eSports Industry has provided many benefits for many people. This industry has opened up a lot of new jobs in the creative sector which have significant economic benefits for Indonesia.

Not only earning an income from being an athlete in this industry, but one can act as an organizer, shoutcaster, content creator, and various other professions according to their respective talents in eSports competitions that are held at home.

One example of the industry in the eSports field is the Mobile Game game, PUBG Mobile, the most popular battle royale game in the world and also in Indonesia, has delivered many career opportunities in the eSports industry.

Although currently many eSport offline events have been stopped because of the Corona pandemic (COVID-19), it does not discourage PUBG Mobile activities to continue to hold online events on a world scale, such as PUBG Mobile Pro League Season 1 and most recently, PUBG Indonesia’s Mobile National Championship (PINC) 2020, which is predicted to be the most popular national eSport tournament this year, recorded more than 51,000 participants from all over Indonesia have registered to take part in the PINC 2020 event.

With the industry trends in the eSports field, especially PUBG Mobile, which continues to climb and develop and then add great interest from young people, making various kinds of parties competing to hold PUBG Mobile competitions in Indonesia, starting from government agencies that aim to explore creativity and develop the potential of young people, to the private sector, who are interested in increasing the value of selling their brand in the eyes of young people.

For example, in the near future, the government through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in collaboration with GGWP, will hold a PUBG Mobile competition titled Baparekraf Game Prime 2020 in August, and offer a total prize pool of up to Rp 1 billion.

As if not to be outdone by the government, the private sector is competing to hold this PUBG Mobile competition. Within the next 3 months, there will be competitions held by private parties, including the Gopay Arena Championship, which is now taking place with a total prize pool of IDR 2.2 billion, IES Smartfren Indonesia Championship with a total prize pool of IDR 500 million, Nusantara Battleground with a total prize pool of IDR 40 million, Esports Superstars Battle with a total prize pool of IDR 250 million and ROG Mabro with a total prize pool of IDR 20 million.

With the great interest of young people and the ecosystem formed by various competitions and activities in the eSports industry, the PUBG Mobile hopes that the government can continue to support this ecosystem so that more eSports athletes will be born for the future and the jobs of this creative industry are also getting wider.
